KUPU is inspired from the butterfly effect found in nature, where small things lead to big change. Interpreted into a modern and minimal pattern, we found it to be the perfect symbol to inspire us: dreamers, seekers, wanderers, as we pursue our dreams.
Indigo is one of the most interesting dye traditions that we have found through our travels in Indonesia. Tied to strong beliefs and values in the local community, the blue produced is rich, complex and unparalleled in beauty.
Unlike most commercial dyers, we use natural Javanese brown sugar as the natural reducing agent of the Indigo. The enzymes in the sugar work slowly, liberating the Indican molecules and allowing it to bond naturally without the use of any harsh chemicals.
The other colors (burgundy and black) in the KUPU collection is dyed in a centralized workshop with water-waste management system using synthetic, non-azo dye.
